The Judo Grading System: More than Just Colours

In judo, the belt around the waist is much more than part of the uniform—it’s a symbol of progress, knowledge, and dedication. When Master Jigoro Kano created judo in Japan, he introduced belts as a way to recognise achievement and encourage steady growth. His first two students were graded straight from white belt to black belt after years of practice, but soon the coloured belt system was developed to make the journey easier to follow and celebrate along the way.

The standard belt progression goes from White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, and Brown, before reaching Black. Each step represents not only the techniques a judoka has learned, but also their growth in perseverance, confidence, and understanding of judo’s values. Up to blue belt, gradings are usually done at club level, while brown belt is awarded at district level. Black belt, or Sho-Dan, is a national achievement in South Africa and is a milestone of both skill and character.

For children, there is also a special junior system known as mon-grading. At clubs like Nintai Martial Arts, this allows younger judoka to progress in smaller steps with belts containing a central white stripe or half-coloured belts. It keeps training exciting and motivating, showing progress every school term and helping children stay focused and proud of their efforts.

Beyond black belt, the journey continues. Higher grades, known as Dan ranks, indicated by a red or gold stripe on the belt, reflect not just skill but decades of commitment and contribution to judo. From red-and-white paneled belts (6th, 7th and 8th Dan) that symbolise mastery and humility, to the rare red belts of 9th and 10th Dan, these honours celebrate a lifetime of dedication.

The belt system is not about rushing to the top—it’s about enjoying the journey. Each colour is a chapter in a judoka’s story, filled with learning, effort, and growth both on and off the mat.
